Probe corruption during my rule, Chandy says

Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala's opposition leader Oommen Chandy Tuesday challenged the government to order any inquiry into corruption that may have taken place when he was chief minister in 2004-06.

"We are prepared to face any inquiry. And if you order the inquiry, I will step down from the post of leader of the opposition (in the assembly)," said Chandy.

He was speaking to reporters here after Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem alleged that while the Chandy government was in office, it had gone ahead with a modernisation programme of the Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML), a state-run company engaged in mineral sand separation. He called it a corrupt deal.

Chandy asked why the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) government laid the foundation stone of the plant in October 2006 if it felt that corruption had played a role in the setting up of the plant.
