The trooper, Mohan Munda, fired at Major P. Alexander with his service rifle late Monday. "The officer died on the spot. The soldier was overpowered and arrested. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident," a senior police officer here said.

Scores of army, paramilitary and local policemen performing anti-insurgency duties in Kashmir have been killed in similar circumstances so far.

Authorities say continuous deployment of troopers in a hostile environment often leads to clashes between the security forces.
