Ramallah : The final report of the committee investigating last month's violence in Gaza was handed over to President Mahmoud Abbas Friday, and recommended the prosecution of several Palestinian officials.

Committee member and the president's media advisor, Nabil Amr, said in a press conference that the 200-page report "named several high-ranking political officials who failed to carry out their duties." Many will be prosecuted in civil and military courts, and others will be dealt with by Fatah, he said.

Asked whether the report named MP Mohammad Dahlan, who resigned citing health reasons, or national security commander Raed Abu Shabak, Amr said, "Abu Shabak was relieved of his post and Dahlan resigned two days ago and his resignation was accepted by the president … Dahlan cooperated with the committee and stood before it for three hours … he did not try to deny his part in what happened in Gaza." The report recommended the restructuring of the national security body and to stop arbitrary recruitment.

"The report concluded that the national security's infrastructure is haphazard and could not be relied on. It also found that the body was infiltrated because of arbitrary recruitment and poverty, as well as the absence of field leadership on the ground," he added.

Abbas pledged to carry out the committee's recommendation "to the letter" and to take steps to rebuild the national security body on a professional basis, he added.
