Srinagar : Can India and Pakistan ever hold a joint military exercise? Maybe, says Defence Minister A K Antony.

"We want friendly relations with all our neighbours. We are going to have a joint military exercise with China in October this year," Antony told reporters here today while elaborating on New Delhi's endeavour to build peace with its neighbours.

Did this mean India could have a joint military exercise with Pakistan sometime in the future, a reporter asked.

"Maybe. Nobody thought a year back that we would have a military exercise with China," a smiling Antony said.

Four decades after they fought a bitter border war in 1962, India and China have decided to hold periodic joint military training exercises. The decision was made during army chief Gen J J Singh's recent visit to China.

In April 2005, the two countries signed an agreement to forge a "strategic partnership". Last year, India and China signed a memorandum of understanding to institutionalise military training, exercise exchanges and other contacts.
