Five killed in firecracker explosion in Bengal

Kolkata : Five people were killed and 27 injured Monday in an explosion at a firecracker making facility in a West Bengal village.

Police said the incident occurred at Singherkon village under Kalna police station in Burdwan district, about 85 km from here, in a primary school room where about 40 people were manufacturing firecrackers to celebrate their folk festival "Jhapan Utsav".

The explosion was sparked by the blast of an electric bulb in the room at about 12.30 p.m., villagers and eyewitnesses said.

Three of the victims died on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

At least 17 people, including children and women, were admitted in hospital. Ten others were discharged after first aid.
