Police said separatist guerrillas detonated a pre-planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the prestigious Presentation Convent High School, in the posh Rajbagh locality, while an army convoy was passing through the area.

"An army bus carrying soldiers was damaged in the explosion. 22 soldiers were wounded in the blast. The injured soldiers were evacuated to the hospital for treatment," a senior army officer said.

"It was a small convoy," he added.

Quick reaction teams of the army reached the spot immediately and took the injured to the army base hospital in the capital's Badami Bagh Cantonment area.

The area where the blast occurred was searched and traffic was restored on the road, which is guarded by paramilitary road opening parties (ROP). The administration has ordered the closure of the Presentation Convent School for the day in view of the explosion.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
