Amit, who was acquitted Thursday by a special court in the 2003 murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramavatar Jaggi, told reporters: "My dad's political enemies made the best effort to trap me, but I had always reposed my faith in the judiciary."

"The enemies will be exposed when the time comes," Jogi, 30, said.

The Congress veteran's son described his acquittal as a "victory of justice" but refused to comment on his two long time associates, Abhay Goel and Yahaya Dhebar, getting life imprisonment.

Additional Sessions and Special Judge (Atrocities) had awarded life sentence to 19 of the co-accused and five years to another nine. Amit was the only one acquitted.

Though the Jaggi family has expressed "surprise" over the acquittal and has said it would go the high court for "complete justice". The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also indicated it would challenge the acquittal.

The sensational murder of Jaggi in the heart of the capital in June 2003 has been a potent political tool for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Congress.

Jaggi's son Satish had named the then state chief minister Ajit Jogi and Amit as prime suspects in a first information report (FIR) lodged an hour after the killing.

The BJP handed the case over to the CBI when it came to power in December 2003. The country's premier investigating agency had chargesheeted 29 people, naming Amit as the prime accused.
