Indian Railways generates record cash surplus

New Delhi : The Indian Railways has generated a cash surplus of Rs.201.53 billion before dividend for 2006-07 against Rs.147.09 billion in the previous year, registering a 27 percent increase.

The gross earnings were Rs.623.67 billion in 2006-07 compared to Rs.544.04 billion during 2005-06. The fund balance as on March 31, 2007, was Rs.165.28 billion, an official release said Friday.

The operating ratio of the Indian Railways has come down to 78.68 percent in 2006-07 from 83.72 percent during its previous year.

The railways department also registered record performance in goods earnings as well as passenger earnings during 2006-07. The total goods earning for last year was Rs.417.16 billion against Rs.362.86 billion in 2005-06.

The total passenger earnings touched Rs.172.24 billion during 2006-07 against Rs.151.26 billion during the previous year.

The net payable dividend was Rs.424.75 billion compared to Rs.366.79 billion in 2005-06.
