New Delhi : The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Friday denied that a man arrested by the Delhi Police for impersonation earlier this week for trying to cheat Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh was a law officer.
"B.K. Verma claimed to be working as a law officer in the PMO. This is to clarify that there is no such person working in the PMO," said a statement.
Verma had approached Amar Singh in March this year after reading about the Supreme Court case against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. Posing as a senior law officer, Verma claimed that he has high connections within the judiciary and could sort out the cases concerning Amar Singh.
Verma reportedly sought Rs.50 million for settling all the cases.
This is the second case in four months that a person posing as a PMO official has been arrested.
In February, a former director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), M.V. Rao, was arrested for allegedly posing as an advisor to the prime minister.
The police recovered fake stationery and visiting cards from Rao's south Delhi residence and he has now reportedly become a key link in a sprawling investigation into defence deals and leakage of classified information on government arms purchases.
Rao, say intelligence sources, was also found to be working as a director in Commerce-1, a firm owned by arms dealer Suresh Nanda, already under a CBI probe for alleged kickbacks in the Barak anti-missile deal.
