A Haryana government spokesman said Monday that the police commissioner would head the police force in the entire Gurgaon district.

A commissioner would have the powers of a district magistrate, which a district police chief does not.

This is the first of Haryana's 20 districts to have a police commissioner. Other districts will continue with the system of a district police chief.

The spokesman said the decision has been taken in view of the fast development, industrial growth, rapid urbanisation and increase in population in the district.

There will also be a joint commissioner of police of the rank of deputy inspector general.

He said that the district would be divided into three police zones – east, west and south headed by officers of the rank of superintendent of police.
