Humidity compounds discomfort in hot Delhi

New Delhi : After a sweltering weekend, Monday brought some relief for Delhi residents with a slight fall in the day temperature. But humidity continued to be high at nearly 70 percent.

"The temperature recorded until noon is 39 degrees Celsius. The temperature is predicted to be a little lower due to a dust storm by the end of the day. The minimum temperature recorded is 31.5 degrees, which is two degrees above normal," said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Although the temperature until noon was a little lower than that over the weekend when it touched the 45-degree mark, the intense humidity level, at 68 percent, elevated the discomfort Monday.

"The humidity is killing me. Delhi generally has a dry summer but this time it's double the trouble with extreme heat as well as humidity," said Akasah Mehra, a commuter.

Kavita Misra, a student, said: "No amount of water helps. You keep sweating and get dehydrated. It simply sucks out the energy from your body."
