New cabinet secretary assumes charge

New Delhi : K.M. Chandrasekhar, a 1970-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), took over as India's new cabinet secretary here Thursday.

A Kerala-cadre officer, he succeeds B.K. Chaturvedi, who has retired and has been named member of the Planning Commission.

Chandrasekhar was previously the revenue secretary in the finance ministry and the tenure saw a notable surge in revenue collections and the streamlining of tax procedures.

He also held the post of India's ambassador and permanent representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva and served as deputy chief of mission at the Indian embassy in Brussels.

Chandrasekhar graduated in economics from the University of Delhi after which he pursued a master's degree in history. He also secured a master's degree in management studies from the University of Leeds in Britain.
