Police, along with a team of doctors, recovered the female foetuses from the sewage tank near the Buala Nursing Home in Pataudi village, on the outskirts of Gurgaon, following complaints that female foeticide was being carried out at the nursing home.

"A team, sent by the Chandigarh health department, is currently counting the number of foetuses recovered," Additional Superintendent of Police (Gurgaon) Anil Dhawan told IANS.

According to police, a raid was conducted at the nursing home after reports that it was carrying out pre-natal sex determination tests in violation of laws prohibiting such tests. The tests and abortions were being allegedly done by Ajay Kumar Singh, who had been convicted in a similar case earlier.

"We have arrested the person and are verifying his credentials," Dhawan said.

Police have sealed the nursing home and said further investigations were underway.
