"Sourav and Azhar were the best captains India has had in recent times. I played more one-dayers against Azhar and it was great to see how he carried the team," Ponting, who was Australia's two-time World Cup winning captain, said in reply to a query from a reporter here Friday night.

"I played more Test matches against Sourav, and he was a very aggressive one. I specially remember the 2001 Test series, which India fought well under Sourav's leadership. It was the greatest Test series of all time and was pretty closely fought," said the 33-year-old Australian captain, who was here on a promotional visit for the ING Vysya Bank.

In 2001, India came from behind to defeat Australia 2-1 in the Test series but lost the one-day series 2-3.

Ponting was in India for the last two days to launch the 'Run Ricky Run' scheme with ING Vysya Bank. According to the scheme, for every run that he scores in one-day internationals from September, an underprivileged child would be sent to school in India.
