Ramallah : New Prime Minister of the Palestinian emergency government, Salam Fayyad, said Sunday that his government was committed to the political programme of the PLO.
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), chaired by late leader Yasser Arafat and now by President Mahmoud Abbas, had recognized the state of Israel, condemned violence and signed interim peace treaties with Israel in 1994.
Fayyad's pledge was made right after he and 11 ministers of his emergency government were sworn in before Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
The formation of the government came after Islamic Hamas movement took over all security headquarters in the Gaza Strip, including Abbas house and compound.
"The new emergency government would give in its performance the priority to the security file in the West Bank and Gaza Strip," Fayyad said.
He added that the government "will hold a meeting on Monday to urgently discuss the situation, mainly the issues that concern Palestinian citizens."
Fayyad also reiterated that his government "would work to ensure all possible facilities to our Palestinian people."
Meanwhile, Abbas told the ministers in Fayyad's government that "the new government is all what we could do after the coup on the Palestinian National Authority led by Hamas Movement. This coup had urged me to form a new government and to declare a status of emergency all over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip," Abbas added.
Abbas vowed that the new government would work on lifting the international embargo on Gaza and offer all financial and economic support to the people. Abbas also called for implementing all security decisions and the laws that he personally approved as president of the Palestinian Authority.
