Kolkata : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) chief Jyoti Basu said Monday that the West Bengal government will take necessary action to curb any further violence by Trinamool Congress party workers at the Tata Motors small car factory site in Singur.

"If the Trinamool Congress tries to demolish the boundary wall of Tata Motor's small car factory in Singur the government will take appropriate action against them," said Basu after attending the CPI-M's state committee meeting here.

He also evinced satisfaction over the compensation packages that will be given to Singur farmers in lieu of the land acquired for the Tata Motors project

"I am very happy with the compensation package worked out by Industry Minister Nirupam Sen and now it's almost in the final stage. We will distribute the packages to the farmers soon after the matter is settled in the court," he told reporters.

Commenting on Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's suggestion to acquire 600 acres of government land across the road in Singur and to relocate the project there Basu said the land "does not belong to the state government and it is owned by many individuals".

Basu recently held talks with Banerjee at his Salt Lake residence and pledged to look into the possibility of reorganising the land given to Tata Motors.

The talks rekindled hopes of a political consensus over the on-going trouble in Singur and Nandigram.

A total of 997 acres of land in Singur, about 40 km from Kolkata in Hooghly district, had been chosen by Tata Motors for its small car project. The issue has triggered a violent face-off between the government and farmers led by civil society groups and parties like the Trinamool Congress.
