News reports say that Internet service providers in Sri Lanka had blocked access to the site on government orders.

CPJ said in a statement that despite TamilNet's partisan nature, it was widely read and used by diplomats and NGOs to learn about conditions in Tamil areas that are not open to other journalists.

"We call on the government to rescind its decision. All journalists in Sri Lanka must be allowed to carry out their work," said Joel Simon, the CPJ executive director.

CPJ is a New York-based, independent, non-profit group that works to safeguard press freedom worldwide.
