Madurai : About 65 per cent voters cast their ballot Tuesday in the by-election to Tamil Nadu's Madurai West assembly seat, with voting remaining largely peaceful.
Balloting took place at 216 centres in the constituency of 156,182 voters, officials said. There were 28 candidates in the fray.
Polling, which began at 7 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m., was peaceful barring some minor skirmishes between the ruling DMK and the AIADMK, officials said.
The main candidates in the by-election are the AIADMK's 'Sellur' K. Raju and the DMK-backed Congress party's K.S.K. Rajendran.
The by-election followed the death of AIADMK legislator S.V. Shanmugam in February. The votes will be counted June 29.
