Klim, 30, confirmed Wednesday that he was following friend Ian Thorpe into retirement after winning six Olympic medals, all of them in relay events.

"It would be nice to have it down in the pool room," Klim said of the individual Olympic gold medal that eluded him.

He came nearest to win one at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where he finished a close second to Swede Lars Frolander in the 100 metres butterfly.

The famously chrome-domed Klim, who was born in Gdynia, Poland, is a former world record holder in the 100 metres butterfly and 100 metres freestyle.
