Hyderabad : Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee India, in a memorandum sent Wednesday to Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, urged the Union Government to direct Chief Minister YS Rajshekhar Reddy to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the involvement of city police in fake encounters.
"Now when the proximity of certain officers of Gujarat police and Andhra police in fake encounters has been reliably proved, a CBI enquiry into the matter has become inevitable," said Committee's general secretary Lateef Muhammad Khan in the memorandum.
He reminded the UPA chairperson that Chief Minister Reddy has rejected the news of Andhra police personnel hand in the staged encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and burning of his wife Kauser Bi, and refused to order a CBI probe into the matter. On the other hand, State Minister for Home Affairs Jana Reddy says that he did not know anything about it as the matter is old enough. While Hyderabad Police Commissioner has confessed that city police extended helping hand to the Gujarat police team.
"On one hand the Congress is demanding CBI probe into the fake encounter killings while on the other the Congress-led government in the State is rejecting the idea. This shows the dual standard of Congress as well as its insincerity in dealing with this case of fake encounters," reads the memorandum, which seeks the intervention of UPA chairperson in directing the Chief Minister Reddy to order a CBI enquiry into the matter so that the reality might come to light and the killer police team might be awarded due punishment.
