Bush extends unilateral sanctions against Syria

Washington : US President George W. Bush has ordered unilateral sanctions against Syria be extended for another year, citing suspected support for terrorism and continued threat to American security, foreign policy and economy.

The first US sanctions were introduced in May 2004 and toughened two years later in response to what Washington called the Syrian government's support for terrorism, continuing occupation of Lebanon and development of weapons of mass destruction.

The fresh sanction were announced Wednesday.

The sanctions ban weapons supplies to Syria, restrict US trade with the it and freeze accounts of those suspected of helping Syria to shelter prominent terrorists or of being involved in the development of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
