New Delhi : Both houses of parliament were rocked Thursday by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's remarks on people migrating to the national capital from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as well as an attack on the media in Tamil Nadu.
While the Lok Sabha was adjourned without transacting any business as MPs from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh rushed to the well protesting Dikshit's remarks, in the Rajya Sabha engineered killings in Gujarat and an attack on the media by Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK were the issues raised.
MPs, including senior leaders, from the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were on their legs in the Lok Sabha soon after the house observed a one-minute silence to pay tributes to freedom fighters on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first war of independence.
There was utter chaos in house with the members shouting and BJP MPs asking for Dikshit's resignation. Unable to control the situation, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee first adjourned the house till 12 noon and then for the day.
Dikshit had been quoted as saying Wednesday: "Every year, thousands of people come from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states, and more power, water, roads etc are needed for them."
She, however, apologised Thursday for making the "inadvertent" remark.
In the Rajya Sabha, the MPs from the Congress, Left and Samajwadi Parties insisted that the upper house should take up a discussion on the staged police encounters in Gujarat for a discussion.
Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who insisted that the question hour should be taken up, adjourned the house till noon. When the house met again, AIADMK MPs created uproar by raising slogans against Tamil Nadu's M. Karunanidhi-led government.
"Dismiss the Karunanidhi government as it has failed to maintain law and order," was their slogan as they left their seats and moved towards the podium. They were referring to the intra-party violence that resulted in the killing of three people Wednesday.
The proceedings were again adjourned till 2 p.m. but the AIADMK MPs continued their protest, forcing adjournment of the house for the day.
Both houses of parliament have witnessed disruptions and adjournments for the last four days over the staged killings in Gujarat of a Muslim couple.
