Islamabad : Thirty-four countries deported 115,762 Pakistanis in the last two years for either entering illegally or being engaged in illegal activities in their territories, the Pakistani government has informed the National Assembly.
Neighbours India and Afghanistan and Bangladesh that was once part of Pakistan, do not figure in the list, although there are thousands of divided families across South Asia and many of them overstay while paying visits, the Daily Times said Friday.
A section of Pakistanis have been known to operate alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan. Many have been killed during the current NATO-led military operations.
Some 73,001 Pakistanis were deported from various countries in 2005-06 and 42,761 in 2006-07, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar told the National Assembly during question hour Thursday.
Bakhtiar said the Pakistani nationals had been deported from Nepal, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Kenya, Senegal, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, the UAE, Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Niger, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
He added this information had been gathered from Pakistani missions abroad.
Bakhtiar said 72 Pakistanis were imprisoned in Denmark on various charges, including narcotics and violence.
"Our mission in Denmark has been making efforts to extend necessary legal aid to these Pakistani nationals to secure their release," The Daily Times quoted him as saying.
