Kolkata : West Bengal's ruling Left Front Monday arrived at a consensus to hold an all-party meeting at the state level to initiate peace process in the trouble-torn Nandigram.
At a meeting of the Left Front in the presence of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharaya, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) acceded to the proposal of the opposition parties and its own allies like the Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).
"Ideally a district-level all-party meeting in East Midnapore would have been better but since the opposition thinks differently we agreed to a state-level meeting first. We want peace at any cost and hence agreed to what they want," Left Front Committee chairman Biman Basu told a press conference.
The date and other details of the meeting would be finalised following talks between the Front chairman and veteran Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh.
A May 7 meeting of the Left Front had decided on district-level meetings to bring peace while all Front partners began initiating a peace move on their own by speaking to the opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee also had telephonic talks with Ghosh on the all-party meeting to stop bloodbath in Nandigram, which has witnessed spiralling violence and at least 21 deaths since January over a special economic zone (SEZ) project.
