Police said militants sprayed bullets at a posse of anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in a mini-bus stand in the border town of Baramulla resulting in injuries to two RR troopers.

"The injured troopers who were part of the road opening party were taken to hospital where one critically injured RR soldier succumbed to his bullet wounds," said a senior police officer.

"The condition of the other soldier is serious," he added.

The RR troops also returned the fire. The shootout led to panic in Baramulla town. The area was searched jointly by army, paramilitary and police.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
