Baghdad : Iraqi Ministry of Interior on Sunday granted intelligence and security members of the ousted Baath regime a 60-day grace period to register their names at the ministry or face penalty.
Interior Ministry’s director of national command Brigadier Abdulkareem Khalaf said in a press statement that all security and intelligence members must report to the police stations in their residency areas.
The ministry granted a grace period of 60 days to those in Iraq, effective Saturday (May 20), and 90 days to those abroad where they have to report to their country’s embassies and consulates, he added.
Former security members will be re-appointed at security departments, whereas the rest will be referred to retirement, Khalaf added.
He warned the ministry will consider everyone who fail to show up as involved in terrorist activities against the people of Iraq and will be prosecuted.
The former US governor, Paul Bremer, had ordered dissolution of the Iraqi Army and security forces. The move was widely seen as one of the causes of the spread of terrorism in the country.
The government is reviewing Bremer’s orders including the rehabilitation of the Baathists.
