Harish and Manju got custody of their seven-year-old son Amar Pratap Singh, who may not even understand the issue over his identity, on orders of the city's district and sessions court.

Amar was born to Harish and Manju on July 1, 2000 in a private nursing home here. A midwife, Ramesh Rani, sold him to Sukhwinder Singh and Ranjit Kaur for Rs 20,000. Amar's parents were given an abandoned female baby who they brought up as their own.

"When we came to know of this swapping, we filed a complaint and a legal case followed. It took us four years to get legal custody of the child," an elated Harish said.

Signalling an end to a long legal battle that involved DNA testing of the parents and the boy, the court allowed Amar to be legally handed over to Harish and Manju Saturday.

However, the girl child handed over to Harish and Manju will continue to live with them. "We will bring up Muskaan as our own daughter," they said.

Seven-year-old Muskaan does not know if she will ever meet her biological parents.

The Amritsar police is now trying to find leads to locate her parents. The police believe that a poor migrant couple from Bihar or Uttar Pradesh could have abandoned her when she was just a few days old.

"We are trying to investigate her background from Ludhiana, where she was born," an investigating officer said.
