The court also directed the petitioner to produce evidence against Singh in the next hearing, court sources said.

On June 26, 1992, a police team had raided a contractor's house in Begusarai. The police complaint alleges that Singh, along with a few accomplices, was hiding in the house and opened fire on the cops. While two people were arrested, Singh and some others managed to escape.

In January this year, the state government decided to expedite the trial of several old criminal cases, including those against Singh, who is known to be close to Steel Minister and party chief Ram Vilas Paswan.

Though a special public prosecutor has been appointed for the case, the speedy trial is yet to start.

Singh, an MP from Ballia in Bihar, faces many other charges of murder and extortion apart from other criminal activities – all between 1992-96.

Singh is also allegedly involved in the double murders of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders Akhilesh Rai and Ram Udesh Rai in 2006.
