Islamabad : Militants Saturday fired three rockets near an army area in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP), causing minor damage to a factory but hurting no one, police and witnesses said.
Two rockets hit a match factory in the town of Risalpur, about 45 km away from Peshawar where the Pakistan Army’s Cantonment and Military College of Engineering is situated. The Pakistan Air Force academy is located in Risalpur.
One rocket landed in a field near the Pakistan Railways locomotive factory. Risalpur has several important educational institutions and industrial plants.
Residents believed that the rockets were aimed at the cantonment area but missed the target. Police cordoned off the area after the attack and did not allow people to move towards the site.
Attacks against security forces have increased in Pakistan, mostly in the troubled tribal regions and parts of the northwest, in recent months.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency a week ago due to “growing terrorist attacks, activities of the militants, and judicial activism”.
