Addressing a party workers’ rally in the state’s summer capital Srinagar, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said: “The violations of human rights continue unabated in Kashmir. The prime minister’s promise of zero tolerance against human rights violations is nowhere to be seen on the ground here”.

Mulayam Singh also castigated the Congress party for the Babri mosque problem.

“It was Rajiv Gandhi who opened the locks of the Babri mosque for the first time and thereby started the trouble that led to the demolition of the mosque by the forces of Hindutva,” he said.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader and Mulayam confidante Amar Singh also spoke at the party workers’ meet held at the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium in the high security zone here.

“Kashmris have lost faith in New Delhi because of the Congress machinations. They arrested the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah in 1953. They can arrest me now for raising a voice in favour of Muslims,” Mulayam Singh said.

He criticised Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) leader Mayawati, saying that she had sacked 11,000 Muslims appointed by him during his tenure as chief minister.

Monday’s rally was the first Samajwadi Party meeting in the state that was attended by Mulayam Singh and other senior leaders of the party.
