To protest Imam beating partial bandh observed in Kishtwar

Kishtwar: A partial Bandh was observed in this mountainous town in protest against the beating of a priest (Imam) of a local mosque by some unidentified miscreants.

All the shops and other business establishments owned by the Majority community remained closed throughout the day today as a mark of protest.

Though the situation remained normal, reports pouring in from various areas of the town revealed that heavy arrangements of police and paramilitary personnel was made in Hidyal Chowk, where an aged Imam, Ghulam Muhammad Dev, was thrashed by unidentified miscreants on Sunday.

Even after more than 24 hours, police on the other hand has failed to trace out the culprits due to which resentment was bereaving among the locals.

Superintendent of Police in Kishtwar, Mumtaz Ahmed told News Agency of Kashmir that the matter was being investigated at the priority keeping in view the religious sentiments of people involved.

“We have conducted raids at various places since last night but the culprits were still at large”, he however added.

The priest was thrashed by unidentified persons on Sunday evening. Tension gripped the communally sensitive town as the news spread like wild fire. The matter worsened as the some of the eyewitnesses reported that the assailants were from the other community.
