New Delhi : Generation of social awareness and public education is crucial for access to justice for women, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil said.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the National Conference on Access to Justice for Women in the capital Sunday, Patil said the subjects of discussion in the conference are not only close to her heart but also important for national development.
“It must not be forgotten that during the Independence struggle women also participated as equal partners under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership. Today we need to follow the example of Mahatma Gandhi to mobilise the entire nation on issues related to the development of women,” Patil emphasised.
While appreciating the role of NGOs in fighting various social evils and practices, she urged that such organisations should be strengthened and a movement be created with the spirit to develop the society.
“The movement should also help in percolating the benefits of development,” she said.
Patil said that colleges and schools should impart education in such a way that it inspires the younger generation, so that the energy of the youth could be properly mobilised.
Stressing that women should play a crucial role in creating social awareness, the president said that she hoped that women would come forward to launch a large- scale civil movement, enhance their status and fight against all inequalities.
She added that women should also stand to promote both national as well as international causes for the sake of global peace and prosperity.
