Mumbai : The Indian capital markets ended in the red Tuesday in tune with discouraging global cues.
The benchmark sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) shut shop at 19,127.73, down by 119.81 points or 0.62 percent.
The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) declined by 33.55 points or 0.59 percent plotting at 5,698.
However, the broader indices outperformed the frontline benchmark index. The BSE mid-cap index gained 9.24 points or 0.11 percent at 8,393.49 and the BSE small-cap advanced 28.82 points or 0.28 percent at 10,372.07.
US indices tumbled on Monday, as investors feared that the credit crisis there could lead to recession. While the Dow Jones fell over 237 points, the Nasdaq moved down by 56 points.
All Indian American depository receipts (ADRs) trading on US bourses slipped Monday, with ICICI Bank registering the highest fall of 5.91 percent while HDFC Bank lost 5.54 percent.
VSNL, Tata Motors, Infosys, Wipro and ICICI Bank slipped 1-3 percent each.
There was new phenomenal listing on Indian bourses today. Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone, India’s largest non-government cargo terminal, has listed at Rs.770, a premium of 75 percent over its offer price of Rs.440 and touched a high of Rs.1,150 on the BSE, taking its market capitalisation to Rs.10 billion.
The company had entered capital market with an initial public offer of 40.25 million shares, which was oversubscribed by 115.84 times.
The top gainers on the Sensex were Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, which advanced 2.60 percent at Rs.2,672.95, Bajaj Auto gained 2.54 percent at Rs.2,653.05 and State Bank of India moved up by 1.38 percent at Rs.2,273.25.
The top losers on the Sensex were Bharti Airtel that declined 3.32 percent at Rs.916.50, ICICI Bank tumbled 2.18 percent at Rs.1,132.40 and Reliance Energy declined 1.91 percent at Rs.1,755.45.
