Shoaib responding to medicine, Malik’s ankle better: Pak official

Kolkata : Pakistani pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who was admitted to a private hospital on Tuesday with high fever and chest pain, is responding to medicines and is likely to be released shortly, a Pakistani team official said Wednesday.

The indisposition of Shoaib Akhtar ahead of the second India-Pakistan Test match beginning at the Eden Gardens here Nov 30 has caused a major concern to the visiting team, which also had some other players down with various ailments.

“Shoaib Akhtar could be released from hospital Wednesday evening,” said Pakistan team’s media manager Ehsan Mallik.

Akhtar complained of chest pain and was running high fever, it was decided as a precautionary measure to admit him to the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital here Tuesday after he arrived with his teammates in the afternoon.

Mallik said the blood tests reports of Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Sami revealed there was nothing serious and that they just had fever.

Mallik also said skipper Shoaib Malik’s ankle sprain had healed to a great extent and he was able to take part in practice session Wednesday.

Pakistan are trailing 0-1 in the three-match series against India and the second Test starts Friday at the Eden Gardens.

Meanwhile, most of the remaining members of the Indian squad who did not arrive here Tuesday, including master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, arrived Wednesday and were immediately whisked away to the team hotel under heavy security.
