Kolkata : Mohun Bagan slumped to their second successive defeat in the ONGC I-League when Viva Kerala, in a stunner, demolished the three-time champions 3-1 in second round match here Thursday.
Viva Kerala, promoted to the I-league from the first division this year, was spearheaded by their two foreign recruits Wisdom Abbey and Badmus Baba Tunde, while Ishfaq Ahmed gave a consolation goal for the Bagan.
The first goal was a brilliant combination between the two foreigners of Viva Kerala. Wisdom fed Baba Tunde inside the box whose angular shot made it 1-0 for the visitors in the 22nd minute.
Mohun Bagan made a few moves in the first half, but they fell before the rock solid defence of Viva.
In the 25th minute, Wisdom Abbey made most of a Bagan goalkeeper’s miss and slotted into an empty net putting Viva 2-0 ahead.
The home team’s mid-field was a bag of bones, with Douglas kneeing into the opposition for lack of pace. Baichung as the lone forward was left alone crying for a ball.
In the 68the minute of the match Isfaq scored one for the home team. His neat placement of a Lalkamal through left the Kerala goalie stranded. With the strike everyone thought Bagan would script a comeback.
But Wisdom had other ideas. He latched on to a Vimal cross to fire home, in the 88th minute, to make it 3-1 and kill any such chance of a Bagan comeback.
