We are committed to Gandhi, Nehru, Patel’s principles: Congress

New Delhi : Claiming credit for getting Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary declared as International Non-Violence Day by the United Nations, the Congress party Monday said it remains wedded to the principles of ‘GNP’ – Gandhi, Nehru and Patel.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that it was an initiative undertaken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in January this year that was later supported by 122 organisations from 91 countries that saw Oct 2 being observed as International Non-Violence Day.

“Sonia Gandhi has gone specially to the United Nations to thank the world and the global community for the solidarity shown for this endeavour which is a global tribute to the father of the nation,” he said.

Taking a dig at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Singhvi said the Congress was happy that other parties were also observing Gandhiji’s birth anniversary even if they were “ironically doing so with sticks in hand”.

He said that some parties that now celebrate the Mahatma’s birth anniversary have never followed the Gandhian principles and had not participated in the freedom struggle.

He added that the Congress party continued to be guided by the principles of Gandhi, first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and first home minister Vallabhbhai Patel.
