Six LTTE rebels killed

Colombo : At least six Tamil Tigers guerrillas have been killed in continuing clashes with government troops in Sri Lanka’s north, military officials said Saturday.

They said that at least three members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed in a confrontation at Welioya, in the northernmost Singhalese settlement in the country, Friday night.

In Vavuniya’s Periyathampanai area in the north, three LTTE cadres were killed Friday.

The LTTE and government troops have been clashing regularly in the north since the middle of last month.

The military said that 70 LTTE rebels and nine Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed in Vavuniya and Mannar districts in the last week.

More than 5,000 people have died in a new wave of violence since the end of 2005.
