Washington : The United States Saturday congratulated Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for his re-election to the post.
“Pakistan is an important partner and ally to the United States and we congratulate them for today’s election,” White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.
“We look forward to the electoral commission’s announcement and to working with all of Pakistan’s leaders on important bilateral, regional and counter terrorism issues,” Stanzel said.
According to Pakistan media reports, Musharraf was unofficially declared winner of the presidential elections Saturday.
The results of the poll from the National Assembly, Senate and four provincial assemblies showed that Musharraf achieved a crushing victory.
Pakistan has been a key US ally in the war against terrorism.
