Bus-train crash kills 28, injures 73 in Cuba

Havana : At least 28 people were killed and 73 others were injured, 15 of them seriously, when a train hit a bus at a railroad crossing in eastern Cuba, state television reported.

The accident occurred around 11.45 a.m. Saturday at the La Mambisa crossing in the town of Veguita in Granma province, located more than 800 km east of Havana, Spanish news agency EFE reported.

The injured were taken to hospitals in the cities of Bayamo and Manzanillo, both located in Granma province.

The cause of the accident, one of the most serious on the island in some time, is under investigation, state television said.

Granma province officials went to get a firsthand look at the accident scene, where dozens of residents helped the injured and donated blood.

The passenger train was headed from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba to Manzanillo, while the bus was plying a route from Bayamo to Campechuela, state television said.
