Dhaka : A district court in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka Monday sentenced a former interior minister to 13 years in jail on charges of corruption, judicial officials said.
The court handed down the sentence to Mohammad Nasim, who headed the ministry of the interior in the government of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina between 1996 and 2001.
Judge Feroze Alam also convicted Nasim’s wife Laila Anjumand Banu on charges of abetting her husband in hiding tens of thousands of dollars from tax officials.
Banu was sentenced to three years in prison.
The couple were fined additionally and their illegal wealth confiscated.
