State govts. encroaching waqf properties: JPC chairman

Chandigarh: Mr SM Laljan Basha, chairaman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee probing waqf properties in India, charged the state Governments of encroaching upon most of the waqf properties and demanded removal of these encroachment.

Mr Basha said in a press conference that there are total six lakhs units of waqf property in this country and state Governments have encroached upon most of these units or properties. The Chairman said, giving an instance, that a sports college in Jalandhar on 40 acres of land is a waqf property part of which was recently sold off to the Reliance Company.

In Haryana out of a total of 24000 acres of Wakf land 12000 were Wakf properties, 250 of which are under illegal occupation.
