“I know how much you are concerned about the Iranian nuclear programme. That’s why I want to inform you about the results of my visit,” Putin was quoted by Interfax as telling Olmert at the Kremlin.

Israel’s prime minister said he was “concerned” about how relations between his country and Iran were going. Olmert was planning to promote harder sanctions against Iran during his visit to Moscow, Israeli press reports said.

After his meeting with Putin, Olmert intended to continue lobbying the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council in France and Britain, it was said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was also planning to travel to China on Saturday, an employee at the Foreign Office in Jerusalem said, adding Israel was taking the threats of the Iranian leadership very seriously and supported a new Security Council resolution.

Putin Tuesday backed the Iranian government in its nuclear dispute with the West, while also urging Tehran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

The Russian leader was also planning to talk to Olmert about recent developments in the Mideast conflict.

“We know how much effort Israel is putting into improving the situation,” Putin said in Moscow.
