The heist took place in one of the biggest wholesale jewellery stores in the busy Guru bazaar in the city.

The police officials investigating the crime said the burglary seemed to have taken place Sunday night. The shop owners found the shutters of the shop broken.

“We had closed the shop at 5 p.m. Sunday to go for Dusshera festival. Some of our workers were sleeping on the upper floor. We have been devastated,” shop proprietor Pawan Kumar said.

He told the police that since it was the festive season, the volume of gold and silver inside the shop was much more than usual.

“We are investigating the gold theft. Though the owners have not named anyone, they suspect this could be the work of an insider,” district police chief Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh told reporters.

The police claimed that the shop owners were changing the actual amount of gold stolen. The sale-purchase registers of the owner have been seized and were being checked, Singh added.
