Shimla : The Bharti Airtel Ltd launched its mobile services Wednesday in the remote Lahaul and Spiti district in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, company officials said.
The Lahaul Valley bordering Tibet remains cut off from the rest of the country for over half a year due to heavy snowfall in the high mountain ranges and passes.
“Airtel services will now be available in and around Udaipur, besides Keylong, the only town in the district,” said R.V.S. Bhullar, CEO, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Himachal Pradesh Circle.
“On Wednesday, Airtel has also completed installing 750 towers across the hill state and is now offering services to 57 towns and some 8,000 villages,” Bhullar added.
“Besides the people of Lahaul, Airtel services will also benefit the Border Roads Organisation and the Armed Forces living in this hard and extremely cold region,” he pointed out.
Airtel is the oldest mobile operator in the state. It started its services here in 1996. The company claims to be the largest mobile services operator followed by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and half a dozen other players.
