Berlin, Oct 24, IRNA ,The US is pressing Germany on assuming a greater role in the controversial anti-terror mission ‘Operation Enduring Freedom'(OEF) in Afghanistan, news reports said here Wednesday.
A senior US Defense Department official met with key legislators of four German parties which are represented in the German parliament ahead of next month’s crucial vote on extending the American-led anti -terror operations.
Mary Beth Long who heads the Pentagon’s department for international security issues, was quoted as saying in her meeting with the German MPs that OEF did not only encompass anti-terror missions but also military training.
Although Germany has presently no anti-terror troops in war- stricken Afghanistan, renewing the OEF mandate is considered as symbolic support for the so-called ‘American war on terror’.
Most Germans have a very sceptical view of OEF operations in Afghanistan after news reports surfaced about American mass killings of Afghan civilians.
