Defence minister to visit Kashmir Saturday

Jammu : The Defence Minister AK Antony will review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir during a one day visit to the Valley on October 27.

Defence spokesman Col SD Goswami told News Agency of Kashmir that defence minister would visit Valley on Saturday to review security situation across the state.

The minister, he said is scheduled to hold meetings with Senior Army and State Government Officials during his visit.

Antony will also inaugurate the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIMWS), Pahalgam and will attend the Executive Council and General Body Meetings of the Institute.

Set up in October 1983, the JIMWS imparts theoretical and practical training in Mountaineering and rock climbing techniques. It also encourages and imparts training in winter sports.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence today increased the ex-gratia relief and assistance amount to the affected people inhabiting the areas adjacent to the ammunition depot at Khundroo to Rs. 26.75 crores to be disbursed by the Jammu and Kashmir State Government.

It may be recalled that concerned by the loss of means of livelihood and property due to a major fire at the Army’s biggest ammunition depot at Khundroo in Anantnag district on 11 August 2007, the Ministry of Defence had released Rs 10 crores as an interim assistance to the J&K Government on August 28, 2007 to provide relief to the people. With today’s sanction, Ministry of Defence has fully met the amount requested by the State Government. It is hoped that the State Government will take urgent measures in disbursing the amount to the affected people.
