Cairo : The Arab League and Sudan are finalising arrangements for moving some 2,000 Palestinian refugees displaced from Iraq and left in strained conditions on the Iraqi-Syrian borders, Azzam Al-Ahmad, a league official in charge of the dossier of Palestinian refugees in Iraq said.
Sudan had expressed the will to host the 2,000 Palestinian refugees who are members of 400 families temporarily pending their return to their homes, Al-Ahmad told reporters here after his meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa Thursday.
Moussa promised to back the process and help secure honourable life for the Palestinian refugees, he disclosed.
As a partner in the process, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is also providing the necessary material assistance to the growing number of Palestinian refugees, according to Al-Ahmad.
Al-Ahmad, also chairman of the Fatah bloc in the Palestinian Legislative Council, added he briefed Moussa on the situation in the Palestinian territories ahead of the US-proposed international peace conference.
He also briefed the Arab League chief on the results of the recent Israeli military attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the sacked Hamas-led Palestinian government urged the Arab countries Thursday to help Palestinian refugees who were victims of persecution and humiliation across the Middle East.
Chairman of the stalled cabinet diwan Mohammad Al-Madhoun decried, in a statement received by KUNA, instances of persecution, humiliation and deportation being committed against Palestinians across the region.
He regretted the failure of “some Arab countries” to open their borders, “a move that can be compared only to Israeli practices.”
“Is it logical that some Palestinians are forced to live in exile in one country after another indefinitely?” he said.
“Is it logical that a remote country like Brazil receives hundreds of refugees displaced from Iraq while the borders of many Arab and Muslim countries are slammed shut in the faces of these refugees?” he added.
Al-Madhoud urged decision-makers worldwide to give a helping hand to Palestinian refugees.
