Raipur : The Chhattisgarh High Court has admitted appeals against the acquittal of Congress MP and former chief minister Ajit Jogi’s son Amit Jogi in the case of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramavatar Jaggi’s murder and has set Feb 4, 2008 as the date for the final hearing.
A district and sessions court on May 31 this year acquitted Amit of charges of murdering Jaggi who was gunned down on June 4, 2003 in the heart of Raipur when Jogi was the chief minister.
The court had convicted 28 others and awarded life imprisonment to 19 of them who were close associates of Jogi’s 30-year-old son.
The state government as well as the victim’s son Satish Jaggi moved the high court against Amit’s acquittal. Many of those convicted in the case have also filed appeals in the high court seeking their acquittal.
The high court Monday admitted the appeals of the Chhattisgarh Government and the Jaggi family along with the appeals of some of the convicts.
The Jaggi murder case is the most sensational murder cases in the state as the victim’s family and NCP leaders named the then chief minister and his son as prime suspects hours after the killing.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ousted the Congress in December 2003 assembly polls, handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Before his acquittal, Amit Jogi was twice arrested by the CBI and spent about 10 months in Raipur central jail.
