Mexico City : Authorities of the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora confirmed the death of another person after the passage of Hurricane Henriette, bringing to seven the number of fatalities caused by the storm, while the search continued for four people missing at sea.
The latest victim was Thursday identified as Isaac Fuentes Monteverde, 54, who died of a broken neck when Henriette’s powerful winds blew him off the roof of his house in the coastal town of Guaymas. He had evidently gone up on the roof to make repairs to it while the storm, though reduced in strength, was still under way.
Rains associated with what was then Tropical Storm Henriette claimed the lives of six members of the same family over the weekend in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, reported Spanish news agency EFE.
In addition, four people are missing – two Japanese and two Mexicans – after they went boating in the Sea of Cortez but then lost contact with the authorities on shore.
Authorities said that the Mexican navy Thursday continued coordinating the search for the boaters.
Henriette, a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall, had been downgraded to a low-pressure centre by Thursday.
Mexico’s government-owned CFE electric utility said Thursday that its crews have already restored power to 80 percent of Sonora.
Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo reported that the main tourist destinations in Baja California Sur that were hit Tuesday by Henriette are now “ready to receive domestic and international tourists”.
Cabo San Lucas, at the southern tip of Baja California, is a favourite with American and Canadian tourists.
