New Delhi : The ruling Congress in Delhi got a boost a few months ahead of scheduled assembly polls when its students’ wing National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) swept the election to the prestigious Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Saturday.
Though the traditional position of DUSU elections as a bellwether of the capital’s politics is now in question with only 25 percent of the students bothering to vote on Friday, the victory did not stop frenzied celebrations at north and south campuses and around various colleges.
All four NSUI candidates beat their traditional rivals from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – for the posts of office bearers.
Amrita Bahari was elected president, Debraj Talan vice president, Manish Chaudhary secretary and Khushboo Sharma joint secretary of DUSU for the current academic year.
After the win, new DUSU President Amrita Bahari expressed her happiness and said the elected members were committed to work for the welfare of students.
“We thanks the students of Delhi University and are committed to fulfil our promises,” Amrita said.
The NSUI team said they would also try to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi later in the day to seek her blessings.
According to Delhi University, a total of 32 candidates fought the tough battle for the four posts.
